Choosing a sperm donor

Choosing a sperm donor – what to think about?

When you have made the decision to have a child using donor sperm, you go through a process where you need to make several important choices. Choices that affect both you and your future child, and choices that cannot be changed once you get pregnant. Therefore, you must take the time to consider your options before choosing a sperm donor.

We have helped people choosing a sperm donor for 30 years

For three decades, Cryos has helped heterosexual couples, lesbians and single women make their dream of a child come true. Every day, Louise Bach Hansen, Customer Service Consultant at Cryos, guides people in the decision-making process. She has in-depth knowledge about the use of donor sperm and the process of getting a donor child. Here, Louise provides you with good tips on what to consider when choosing a sperm donor.

Choosing a sperm donor – how much do you want to know about him?

One matter we often talk with our customers about is how much information they prefer to have about their sperm donor. You have the option of either choosing a sperm donor with a Basic Profile or one with an Extended Profile. Both have benefits.

A Basic Profile contains information such as the donor’s ethnicity, eye colour, hair colour, height, weight, employment and blood type. This type of profile is typically chosen by customers who want to have as little information about the donor as possible.

To others, it is important to have the opportunity to influence the personality and general features of their children. In such cases, one will typically go for a donor with an Extended Profile when choosing a sperm donor. In addition to the information provided in the basic profile, you also get a sound recording of the donor’s voice, childhood pictures, personality tests, a handwritten letter from the donor. You also get answers to a range of personal questions about the donor with an Extended Profile.

In addition, it is now possible for you to get access to adult photos of your sperm donor thus adding another dimension to your search for the perfect donor. The opportunity to see both childhood and adult photos of your sperm donor equips you with a more comprehensive idea of who your sperm donor is and moreover of the features of your future child.

Free donor search at Cryos when choosing a sperm donor

At other sperm banks, you often have to pay to get information about the donors, but in the Donor Search on our website, you have free access to all donor profiles. A good way to find out if you prefer a donor with a Basic Profile or an Extended Profile is to scroll through a number of different profiles and find out what feels right for you. Notice how it feels when you read about the different donors. Do you like to get a sense of their personalities, or do you prefer more distance to the donor?

Do you want your child to look like you?

When you get a child using donor sperm, 50 per cent of your child’s genetics comes from you as a mother. Because of that, the child is likely to have some of your features. Exactly how much the child resembles you physically and mentally is (still) difficult to predict.

If it’s important for you that your child looks like you and/or your partner, you should go for a donor who has some of the same physical features as yourself or your partner. Choosing a sperm donor with a Basic Profile, you know about the overall physical features such as hair colour and eye colour. If you want to go into details, you should go for a donor with an Extended Profile. This allows you to match you and your donor on several parameters. For example, personality, pictures of you as a baby and educational background. If baby pictures are not enough and you want to see adult photos of your donor you can also get access to this new feature with special access to the website. With the adult photos, you can find a donor who shares the same fundamental traits as either you or your partner.

You can also read about how to choose between an anonymous and a non-anonymous sperm donor here, or you can read about finding your sperm donor in the Cryos Donor Search.

  1. Monica and Maartje says:

    Hello,
From what we can see on the website there is a difference in price between donors for the same type/amount. For example, how come some MOT10 cost more than 700 euros and other MOT10 cost only 220 euros. What is this price difference based upon?
    Thank you for your answer.

    1. Cryos says:

      Dear Monica and Maartje

The reason is, that the price differs from anonymous to non-anonymous donors, if the donor profile is basic or extended and if the straws are ICI or IUI. You can read more about the different types and profiles here: https://dk.cryosinternational.com/donor-sperm/the-donors.

Thank you for your question and please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Service if you have more questions about which type and profile to choose or the pricing.

      /Alexandra

  2. Deborah Rouse says:

Hi, I’m interested in a donor but the sperm MOT20 is not ready for uk? If I reserve it how long until it can be sent to my clinic in the UK? Thanks

    1. Cryos says:

      Hi Deborah,
The MOT is a term showing the number of sperm cells per ml. So to choose a donor who can be approved for the use in UK you must choose a UK standard donor. Whether the straws should be IUI or ICI for your treatment, please check with your clinic what they can accept.
      /Janne

  3. Emma Ruelas says:

    Hello,
I want to buy sperm in the near future but I want to pick a donor that shows no signs of pattern baldness. My father is bald, which means I’m a carrier, so I want to pick a donor that isn’t a carrier. Would your staff be able to provide me with an answer if I were to ask them in the near future? Because I know your donors identity must be kept private.

    1. Cryos says:

      Hi Emma,
Our Customer Service Consultants cannot tell you if a donor is a carrier of baldness. What you can do is to buy access to our donors with adult photos. Then you can get a sense of the donor’s hair tendencies. Red more about donor’s with adult photos here: https://dk.cryosinternational.com/donor-sperm/the-donors/donor-profiles-with-adult-photos
If you have further questions you are more than welcome to contact Customer Service at [email protected]. Thank you 🙂
