Understanding Anonymous vs. Non-Anonymous Donor Profiles
What is the Difference Between Anonymous vs. Non-Anonymous When it Comes to Donor Profiles?
When viewing the Cryos donor search, you will come across donors who are anonymous or non-anonymous with either basic or extended donor profiles. Donors have the opportunity to decide which anonymity they want to be and what profiles they want to give. So, what do these terms even mean?
If you are looking at an anonymous donor, that means you will only have information they have given in their profile, which is either basic or extended. The donors’ identities will never be released to the client or anyone else if they have chosen to be an anonymous donor. The client will also sign an agreement stating that they will not try to contact the donor. Read more here about sperm donor anonymity.
Why choose an anonymous donor?
Your decision may be based on a variety of reasons. Choosing an anonymous donor is typically desired by couples or individuals who just need sperm or eggs to build the family of their dreams, and are not usually interested in knowing their donor’s identity and possibly becoming too attached. Knowing who your donor is doesn’t appeal to everyone; rather it’s a choice of preference based on your personal desires.
When looking at a non-anonymous donor, that means their identity can be revealed to a donor child when he/she has turned 18. If Cryos is not contacted personally by the donor child themselves at that age or older, we will not reach out to them with the donor’s identity.
Why choose a non-anonymous donor?
Again, your decision may be based on a variety of reasons. Non-anonymous donors are typically more popular, due to the fact they are able to be contacted by the donor child at age 18 (only the donor child and not the parents). That is of great value to many future parents who wish to give the opportunity to their child to decide on their own whether he or she wants to seek out their biological origin. Many non-anonymous donors provide extended profiles and aren’t against the possibility of being contacted in the future. It’s a decision they will have to make and be comfortable with.
What is the difference between basic and extended donor profiles?
Basic Donor Profile
A basic donor profile contains a few basic characteristics about the donor, such as: race, ethnicity, eye color, hair color, height, weight, blood type and usually education/occupation. On Cryos’ website the donor will be registered with a number e.g. 6789 where you will be able to view their basic profile.
Extended Donor Profile
An extended donor profile will list all the characteristics that are in a basic profile plus more comprehensive information about the donor, such as their background, favorite pet and family relations. The donor’s profile will be registered with a fake name, e.g. FINN on our donor search.
On most of the profiles, a staff impression will be included. This is a short, subjective description about the donor given from our staff. A childhood photo of the donor will also be inquired as well as a voice message recording of them stating why they became a donor. In 2011, Cryos also started to register Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to be included in our FREE extended donor profiles.
What is the purpose?
The goal of having a basic or extended donor profile for you to view is to give a bit of background information and idea of what characteristics or appearance your baby may have if you decide to choose a donor at Cryos. You will be able to compare and contrast various qualities of other donors so you can find your favorite and perfect match! The decision is up to the donor on whether they are anonymous or non-anonymous and whether they choose to give a basic profile or extended profile, but you get to decide which one is right for you!
