Shipping Donor Sperm Using Dry Ice

Once you’ve found your perfect donor and purchased their donor sperm, you now have the decision to choose which method of shipment you desire for your delivery. Cryos has two shipping options available; an insulated dry ice box or a liquid nitrogen tank. This post will be focusing on shipping with dry ice and why this method may be the right option for you.

Your Dry Ice Shipment – what it is and what do you get?

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide and is used as a cooling agent. The sperm straws you ordered will be placed in the dry ice box for it to stay viable for your procedure. The dry ice will last for approximately 3 days before thawing, depending on the temperature of the surrounding environment. Those 3 days include shipping time – so take that into consideration when selecting your shipping date. To ensure that your shipment arrives, dry ice shipments are only available Monday through Wednesday to ensure that your shipment reaches its destination before the weekend. This is to ensure that your sperm straws stay viable.

Following delivery, it is vital that the sperm straws are in constant contact with the dry ice until you’re ready to thaw/use and that both the inner box and the outer box are closed. Once you have successfully used your sperm straws, you may discard the box and straws as they are non-returnable.

Also included in your dry ice box will be the following:

  • Packing List of what is included
  • Handling Instructions and Thawing Procedures for your sperm straws
  • Safety Warning for Handling of Dry Ice (CO2)
  • Summary of Records – Containing test results and Standard release information for your donor
  • Insemination Kit for Home Insemination (containing a needle-less syringe, instructions of usage)

Please note that dry ice shipments cannot be shipped to New York State.

Who is Cryos’ Shipping Provider?

Cryos uses FedEx as its’ courier for all shipments. Please keep in mind that Cryos cannot guarantee shipments that may be delayed due to weather. For delivery time estimates, visit here.

Receiving your Delivery of Sperm

You or another adult MUST be at home to receive the delivery and sign for the package. FedEx will likely not leave your delivery with a doorman, as they are not obliged to sign on your behalf. You will likely incur delays if this is not fulfilled. Please keep in mind that if FedEx has returned your delivery, your 3 day window could be significantly shortened or expired altogether.
